Rhino will release a six-disc collection of The Doors' 1970 Felt Forum concerts titled Live in New York. The four shows were Jim Morrison's last New York performances.

On Nov. 10 Rhino Records will release a six-disc collection of recordings of The Doors’ last four New York concerts before Jim Morrison’s death titled Live in New York. The shows were performed on Jan. 17 and 18, 1970, at the Big Apple’s Felt Forum, which is now called the WaMu Theater.

The CD set includes each of the four shows in its entirety. Close to one third of the set’s ninety tracks have never been released, offering Doors fans an exciting listen. The track list includes a unique version of the fan favorite “Break on Through.”

The Doors' Robby Krieger on the Previously Unreleased Version of “Break on Through”

In an article titled “The Doors, ‘Break on Through (Live in New York)’ – Song Premiere” by Steve Baltin, Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger states: “that particular version of ‘Break on Through’ works more in a jazzy, bluesy feel. Jim kind of messed around with it in the middle there, not that he didn’t always do that. But it’s a particularly cool version I think.”

Other featured tunes include “Roadhouse Blues,” “Ship of Fools,” “Back Door Man,” “Light My Fire,” “When the Music’s Over,” and “Maggie M’Gill.”

When discussing the cover songs the band performed during the concerts, Krieger continues, “Those were the bluesy songs we always used to do. We probably hadn’t done some of them in years, but we had resurrected them for these shows.”

The Doors' Morrison Hotel

At the time the recordings were made, the group was performing in support of its upcoming album Morrison Hotel. In addition, the shows were taped with the intention of including some of the tracks on the July 1970 Absolutely Live album.

The Doors' John Densmore on the Felt Forum

According to a statement released by drummer John Densmore, the band opted to perform at the more intimate Felt Forum in lieu of the adjacent Madison Square Garden because “you could feel the audience more … the acoustics were much better because it was designed for music.”

In addition to the Live in New York set, Rhino Records will release the entire Doors-Jim Morrison albums on vinyl on Sept. 15. To view the extensive track list or purchase Live in New York, please visit the Rhino Records website.
